There are three ways of checking your Home Depot gift card balance: at the store, online, and over the phone. Regardless of the method you choose, you’ll need to find the 19-digit gift card number as well as the 4-digit identification number of your gift card. Both are located at the back of the gift card.

How to check your Home Depot gift card balance in-store

Walk into any Home Depot store and ask their customer service to check your gift card balance. This is an easy way to know how much you have left in the card, especially if you don’t mind making the short trip to the store. Alternatively, you can do so on a day that you visit Home Depot to shop.

It’s not uncommon for some Home Depot stores to write your remaining balance on the back of your gift card after you’ve used it. This can be beneficial because you won’t have to keep receipts (if you don’t want to). And, of course, you get to know your Home Depot gift card balance in the process.

So, even if they don’t voluntarily write your remaining balance, you can personally request them to do so every time you use the card at a store location. That way, you’ll always know how much money you still have left on the gift card. And you can still keep Home Depot receipts as proof of purchase, just in case you need them.

How to check your Home Depot gift card balance online

If you’re not able to visit a Home Depot store for one reason or another, you can still check your gift card balance over the internet. Here’s a step-by-step procedure for that:

1. On your browser, click here to open the Home Depot gift card checker.

2. Enter your 19-digit card number and 4-digit PIN. You’ll also need to complete a reCAPTCHA for security reasons.

Not sure where your Home Depot gift card PIN is located? You’ll typically find it on the back of the gift card, just below or above the barcode.

3. Click “Check Balance” to see how much you still have left on your gift card.

There are isolated instances when the reCAPTCHA may bar your request because of fraud concerns1. If that happens, the Home Depot gift card checker won’t generate your balance. In which case, you have the option to check your gift card balance using Home Depot’s checkout system. You don’t have to buy anything.

Simply head over to the Home Depot website, add an item to your cart, and start the checkout process. Again, do not complete the purchase (unless you actually want to buy the item). You’ll be prompt to enter your gift card number. Fill it in. Home Depot will generate your gift card balance to show if you have enough money in the card to complete the purchase. Once you’ve seen how much money you have left in the card, you can cancel the checkout process.

How to check your Home Depot gift card balance over the phone

The final way to check your balance is by calling the Home Depot gift card phone number at 1-800-430-3376. You’ll be able to speak to customer support and ask them to check your gift card balance. Remember to keep your card number on hand.

Home Depot gift card FAQ:

This section answers some of the most frequently asked questions about Home Depot gift cards:

How can I load more funds onto my Home Depot gift card?

If your Home Depot gift card balance is running down, you can add more funds to the card. There are two ways of doing that:

  • Visit any Home Depot store and ask their customer service to reload your gift card.
  • Go to the Home Depot gift cards page on your browser, click on “Reload Gift Card”, then follow the prompts to add cash to your card.

It’s worth pointing out that unlike many other gift cards, Home Depot gift cards are not voided when the balance hits $0. So, even if you spend every last dollar on your card, you can still reload and reuse it. Needless to say, it will be declined if you don’t have enough money to complete the purchase of merchandise, groceries or anything else. That’s where a Home Depot gift card checker comes in – it can help you know your balance at any given time. If you’re running low, you can reload the card.

Home Depot gift cards are reloadable using a U.S.-recognized credit or debit card, like a Mastercard or Visa card. But if, for one reason or another, you’re not able to use your bank card, then you reload your gift card using cash at any Home Depot store.

Where can I buy a Home Depot gift card?

You can buy a physical Home Depot gift card from a number of locations, including:

  • Any Home Depot store
  • The Home Depot website (https://www.homedepot.com/)
  • Cashstar
  • Large retail stores or department stores like Target and Staples
  • Local stores like Kroger
  • Dollar General

Apart from a physical gift card, you can opt to buy a Home Depot eGift card (also known as virtual gift cards). eGift cards are just like physical gift cards, except they are in digital format (typically in PDF). When you buy one, a QR code is sent to your email (or the recipient’s email, if you’re buying for someone else) along with the number and pin of the gift card.

You then use that number and PIN when paying for purchases. And if you decide to use the eGift in the store, then the attendant will scan the QR code to complete payment. Home Depot virtual gift cards are available from a number of sellers, including PayPal, the Home Depot website, eGifter.com and mygiftcardplus.com.

Home Depot accepts multiple payment methods for physical gift cards and eGift cards. They including Mastercard, Visa, Discover, American Express, and PayPal.

Something worth keeping in mind is that Home Depot’s returns policy holds that gift cards and eGift cards are neither returnable nor redeemable for cash. Plus, you can only use the card as store credit. You may not use it to pay down a loan account (such as credit cards or mortgages for home purchases).

Therefore, make sure that your Home Depot gift card is usable for the purpose you want before buying one. Otherwise, it may contribute to the $15.3 billion worth of unused gift cards currently in the U.S.3 But you can still make returns and claim refunds for goods bought with a Home Depot gift card. You won’t get cash, but you’ll get store credit.

How do I activate my Home Depot gift card?

The procedure for activating your Home Depot gift card depends on how you bought the card to start with. If you bought it from a store, allow the cashier to activate it for you before you leave that store.

Plastic (or physical) gift cards purchased online come inactive and have to be activated on the delivery date. The card is typically shipped with UPS. On the delivery date, the UPS staff will confirm to Home Depot that you’ve received the card. In turn, Home Depot will activate it immediately, allowing you to start using it for payments.

What if it’s a virtual gift card order? In that case, it will be activated as soon as your request (for the card) is processed. Thus, the digital gift card code that comes to your email is already activated and ready for use. Active Home Depot gift cards do not have expiration dates, so you have no reason to spend the balance hurriedly.

How do I check other gift card balances?

Just as there’s a Home Depot gift card checker on the Home Depot website, many gift cards allow you to pull their balances on the issuer’s website. If, for example, you buy a Vanilla gift card, you can check its balance on the Vanilla gift website.

There are also third-party sites like giftcards.com that can instantly pull balances of select cards. All you need is the card’s number and pin, and you’re good to go. While this might be a good option for someone who doesn’t know any other way to check their gift card balance, it’s not entirely the safest bet. Some third-party websites seem legitimate but are, in fact, fraudulent4. Such sites use your gift card number and pin to steal your balance, rendering the card useless. Therefore, apart from the card issuer’s official site, explore other options before you visit any third-party website to check your balance.

One alternative that’s at your disposal is calling the card issuer directly. You’ll typically find a toll-free number at the back of your gift card5. Use it to reach out to customer support and ask them to check your gift card balance. If the card doesn’t have a number to call, you can always visit the issuer’s website and get their contact details.
